Good internet speed

  1. Updating Kali Linux is a slower process then other internet tasks. If we have a slower internet then it will be more slow, so please maintain a decent network speed.

Check the right repository

We should check our repository by using following command:

mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list

Copy peast on your terminal

This server is usually overloaded by the users. But we should not try unofficial repositories that may break our Kali Linux system.

Please change repositories, The screenshot of the command is following:

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free

Please try to update and see speed,if no improvement follow this step.

Download via the http secure protocol

We need to install a tool called apt-transport-https by using following command in our Kali Linux system:

apt-get install apt-transport-https -y
    • This is a very small tool with 149kb size. So it will install in some second.
sudo apt-get update && upgrade -y

Other tips

When you’re downloading mass update for fresh Kali Linux install make sure you have a decent internet speed.

I also recommend you to use public DNS not the DNS provided by your ISP. Change to OpenDNS or Google DNS preferrably.

## Open and change it into EITHER OpenDNS or Google DNS
## Remove other DNS and DNS generated by NetworkManager
$ leafpad /etc/resolv.conf
## OpenDNS ##
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
## Google DNS ##
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

to change DNS server please type this command

mousepad /etc/resolv.conf

Then save and close it. This change will boost the speed and make you happy.
