Advance Surveying — What This Subject Is About
Basic Surveying taught you the chain, the compass and the level. Advance Surveying takes you further — to the plane table, the theodolite, tacheometry, curve setting, the total station, GPS and GIS. It is one of the two 200-mark subjects of the 4th semester (a theory paper 4.3 and a lab 4.4), and it carries 4 credits — the most in the semester.
You will set out circular curves by Rankine's method of deflection angles, balance a theodolite traverse by Bowditch's rule, measure distances with an EDM and a total station, and locate a station with GPS. The lab has 13 practicals, including plane table surveys by radiation, intersection and resection, theodolite and total station traverses plotted on A1 sheets, and a GPS exercise. (The spelling “Advance Surveying” is as printed in the PDF.)

Unit 5 — Remote Sensing, GPS and GIS (6 Periods, 20%)
Remote sensing — overview, remote sensing system, applications of remote sensing in civil engineering, land use / land cover, mapping, disaster management; use of Global Positioning System (G.P.S.) instruments; Geographic Information System (GIS): overview, components, applications, software for GIS; introduction to drone surveying.
Remote sensing, GPS and GIS — how they work, their uses in civil engineering, and an introduction to drone surveying.
Practical Work
- Use plane table survey to prepare plans of a plot of seven sided closed traverse by radiation method.
- Use plane table survey to prepare plans, locate details by intersection method and resection method (two point problem and three point problem).
- Use plane table survey to prepare plans, locate details by traversing method.
- Use plane table survey to carry out survey project for closed traverse for minimum five sides around a building.
- Use transit theodolite to measure horizontal and vertical angle by direct method.
- Plot the traverse on A1 size imperial drawing sheet for the collected data from preceding theodolite survey project.
And more — the complete list of 13 practicals is inside the PDF.
