The <title> tag sits inside the <head> and sets the text shown on the browser tab. But it does much more than that — it is also the blue clickable headline Google shows in search results, and the name used when someone bookmarks your page.
Of all the tags on a page, the title carries the most weight for search engines. When Google decides what your page is about, it looks at the title first. A page with a good title can outrank a page with better content but a vague title like "Home" or "Untitled".
Notice that the title is never shown inside the page itself. Visitors only see it in the tab, in search results, and in bookmarks — which is exactly why it is so easy to forget, and so important to get right.
