Theory of Structure — What This Subject Is About
Mechanics of Material taught you how a single beam or column behaves. Theory of Structure teaches you how whole structures behave — frames, trusses and dams — and how to analyse them. It is a theory subject (4.5) of 100 marks and 3 credits, with 2 lectures and 1 tutorial a week, and it is the direct continuation of the 3rd semester's Mechanics of Material.
You will find principal stresses with Mohr's circle, apply the middle third rule to columns, chimneys and dams, use strain energy and Castigliano's first theorem to find deflections, analyse continuous beams and portal frames by the moment distribution and slope deflection methods, and find the forces in truss members by the method of joints and the method of sections.
Subject 4.5 (Theory) • Total 100 Marks • 3 Credits • L 2 – T 1 • 4th Semester — Civil Engineering • Session 2026–27

What You Will Study
Unit 1 — Principal Stress and Strain (6 Periods, 20%)
Stress on inclined planes, principal plane and principal stress in elements subjected to direct and shear stress and their combinations; Mohr circle for calculation of stress on inclined planes and principal strain for above cases.
Principal stress and strain — stresses on inclined planes, principal planes, and Mohr's circle.
Unit 2 — Combined Direct and Bending Stress (6 Periods, 20%)
Eccentric loading, middle third rule, columns subjected to uni-axial and bi-axial eccentric loading; dams — application of middle third rule for fixing the base width, calculation of stresses at the base of dam and stability of dam against overturning and sliding; vertical structures like chimney subjected to movement due to wind forces.
Combined direct and bending stress — eccentric loading, the middle third rule, and the stability of dams and chimneys.
Unit 3 — Strain Energy (6 Periods, 20%)
Strain energy stored in a member due to axial loading and bending; strain energy stored by a beam due to uniform bending moment; work done by a force on a member, law of reciprocal deflection, Betti's law; the first theorem of Castigliano; deflection of truss joints.
Strain energy — energy stored by axial load and bending, Betti's law, Castigliano's first theorem and truss deflections.
Unit 4 — Moment Distribution Method and Slope Deflection Method (5 Periods, 20%)
Moment distribution method: basic proposition, relative stiffness, continuous beams with and without fixed ends; sinking of support, portal frames with and without sway (simple problem only). Slope deflection method: basic concepts, stiffness of members with far end fixed or hinged; development of slope deflection equations and their application to beam and frames.
Moment distribution and slope deflection — analysing continuous beams and portal frames, with and without sway.
Unit 5 — Simple Trusses (5 Periods, 20%)
Types of trusses (simple, Fink, compound Fink, French truss, Pratt truss, Howe truss, north-light truss, king post and queen post truss); calculate support reactions for trusses subjected to point loads at joints; calculate forces in members of truss using method of joints and method of sections.
Simple trusses — Fink, Pratt, Howe, king post and queen post trusses, and finding member forces by joints and by sections.
