How to Read This Calendar — Please Note

• The dates are a plan, not a promise. UPSC prints a clear line on its calendar: the dates of notification, commencement and duration of examinations are liable to change, if the circumstances so warrant. In past years also, some dates have moved.
• The notification is the final word. Every exam gets its own detailed notification on upsc.gov.in before applications open. That notification fixes the confirmed dates, the vacancies, the eligibility and the syllabus. If a calendar date and a notification date ever differ, follow the notification.
• One application covers Prelims and Mains. For Civil Services, Forest Service, Engineering Services and Geo-Scientist, you apply once, at the Prelims stage. That is why the Mains rows in the table have no separate notification or application dates.
• "Reserved" rows are empty slots. UPSC blocks some weekends in advance for recruitment tests (RTs) and examinations that may be announced later. Watch the UPSC website if you are waiting for a departmental or special recruitment.
• LDCE exams are departmental. The CBI (DSP), CISF AC(EXE) and S.O./Steno LDCE entries are Limited Departmental Competitive Examinations — only serving staff of those organisations can appear in them.

Which UPSC Exam Can You Give?

A quick first pointer — always confirm the full eligibility in the official notification of your exam:

• Passed or appearing in Class 12: The NDA & NA exam is the UPSC route open at this stage, for officer entry into the defence forces.
• Graduates: The biggest doors open after graduation — Civil Services (IAS, IPS and other services), Indian Forest Service, CDS (defence officer entry), CAPF (Assistant Commandants) in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB, and the IES/ISS for Economics and Statistics graduates.
• Engineers: The Engineering Services Examination recruits graduate engineers into government technical services.
• Doctors (MBBS): The Combined Medical Services exam is the UPSC route for medical officers.
• Science postgraduates in geology and related subjects: The Combined Geo-Scientist exam covers these specialist posts.

What Should You Do Now?

The next big UPSC opening is very close. The NDA (I) and CDS (I) notifications come out on 2 December 2026, and applications close on 22 December 2026 — a window of only about three weeks. If you are aiming for NDA or CDS, keep your documents ready now — photo, signature, ID proof and certificates — so the form does not get stuck in the last days. Civil Services aspirants get their notification on 13 January 2027.

1. Are the UPSC Calendar 2027 dates final?

No. The calendar gives the planned dates, and UPSC clearly states on it that the dates are liable to change if circumstances require. Treat them as firm planning dates, but treat your exam's official notification — published on upsc.gov.in before applications open — as the final authority.

3. Can UPSC change an exam date after the calendar is out?

Yes, and it has happened in past years. If a date changes, UPSC announces it on its website. This is why serious aspirants check upsc.gov.in regularly, especially in the weeks before their notification and exam.

4. Which is the biggest UPSC exam?

The Civil Services Examination is the biggest and most competitive — it selects officers for the IAS, IPS, IFS and many other services, and lakhs of candidates apply every year. NDA and CDS are the biggest defence-entry exams.
