Transportation Engineering — What This Subject Is About
Every road you travel on and every train you ride in was designed by someone who studied this subject. Transportation Engineering is about how highways and railways are planned, designed, built and maintained — from choosing where a road should go, to shaping its curves and gradients, to testing the soil, aggregate and bitumen it is made of.
In the 5th semester it is one of the two heaviest subjects: a theory paper (5.1) and a lab (5.7) worth 200 marks together. The theory covers highway geometric design, road pavements and railway engineering; the lab is almost entirely testing — CBR, aggregate and bitumen tests — the same tests a site engineer runs on real road projects.
Subject 5.1 (Theory) + 5.7 (Lab) • Total 200 Marks • 4 Credits • 5th Semester — Civil Engineering • Session 2026–27

What roads are made of, how the materials are tested (CBR, aggregate and bitumen tests), and how WBM, bituminous and concrete roads are actually built.
Unit 4 — Basics of Railway Engineering (5 Periods, 15%)
Classification of Indian Railways, zones of Indian Railways; mass transit system; permanent way: ideal requirement, components; rail gauge, types, factors affecting selection of a gauge; rail, rail joints — requirements, types; creep of rail: causes and prevention; sleepers — functions and requirement, types — concrete sleepers and their density; ballast — function and types, suitability; rail fixtures and fastenings — fish plate, spikes, bolts, keys, bearing plates, chairs — types of anchors and anti-creepers.
How Indian Railways is organised and what a railway track is made of — rails, sleepers, ballast and the fittings that hold them together.
Unit 5 — Track Geometrics, Construction and Maintenance (4 Periods, 20%)
Alignment — factors governing rail alignment; track cross sections — standard cross section of single and double line in cutting and embankment; important terms — permanent land, formation width, side drains; railway track geometrics: gradient, curves — types and factors affecting, grade compensation, super elevation, limits of super elevation on curves, cant deficiency, negative cant, coning of wheel, tilting of rail; branching of tracks, points and crossings, turn out — types, components, functions and inspection; track junctions: crossovers, scissor cross over, diamond crossing, track triangle; station — purpose, requirement of railway station, important technical terms, types of railway station, factors affecting site selection for railway station; station yard: classification — passenger, goods, locomotive and marshalling yards; function and drawbacks of marshalling yards; track maintenance — necessity, classification, tools required for track maintenance with their functions, organisation of track maintenance, duties of permanent way inspector, gang mate and key man.
How a track is aligned and maintained — gradients, curves, points and crossings, stations and yards, and who looks after the track.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many marks is Transportation Engineering worth in the 5th semester?
200 marks in total and 4 credits. Transportation Engineering: 100 marks (internal Theory 40, external Theory 60 (3 hrs)); Transportation Engineering Lab.: 100 marks (internal Practical 60, external Practical 40 (3 hrs)).
Which units carry the most weightage in Transportation Engineering?
Construction of Road Pavements (30%, 8 periods) — the highest weightage in the subject. The complete unit-wise weightage table is in the Complete Syllabus section above.
What practical work is there in Transportation Engineering?
12 experiments, including California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Test.; Flakiness and Elongation Index of aggregates.; Angularity Number of aggregates.. The complete list is in the Complete Syllabus section above.
Is Transportation Engineering a theory subject or a practical subject?
Both: Transportation Engineering is theory (L–P 2 – 0); Transportation Engineering Lab. is practical (L–P 0 – 4).
Why is the subject spelt “TRANSPORATION ENGG.” in the scheme table?
That is how it is printed in the official scheme table — a spelling error in the source PDF. The subject pages spell it correctly as “TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING”, and that is the spelling used here and in the PDF.
How can I download the Transportation Engineering syllabus PDF?
The PDF is free to download — use the download link in the Download section below. It is prepared by KAMALDNP Academy from the official BTEUP syllabus.
