Renewable Energy Technology — BTEUP Civil 6th Semester Syllabus 2026-27

Renewable Energy Technology — What This Subject Is About

Solar panels on rooftops, wind turbines on hills, biogas plants in villages — renewable energy is now part of everyday civil engineering, from green buildings to rural infrastructure. Renewable Energy Technology is Open Elective-02, Option A (or you can take Energy Conservation and Audit, or an Advance Skill Development certification instead). It is a 50-mark internal-only subject, so it does not add to the semester total.

The subject covers the world energy picture first, then each source in turn: solar energy (radiation, collectors, solar cells and PV power), wind energy (data, turbines, site selection), bio-energy (biomass, gasifiers, biogas, ethanol and bio-diesel), and the other sources — tidal, wave, OTEC, small hydro, geothermal, hydrogen and fuel cells.

Subject 6.3 (Open Elective-02, Option A) • 50 Marks Internal Only • 2 Credits • L 2 • Total NA — not counted in semester total • Choose this OR Energy Conservation and Audit (OR Advance Skill Development) • 6th Semester — Civil Engineering • Session 2026–27

Renewable energy is sun, wind, biomass and water — the sources a civil engineer now meets on green buildings and rural projects.

What You Will Study

Unit 1 — Introduction (5 Periods, 20%)

World energy use; reserves of energy resources; environmental aspects of energy utilisation; renewable energy scenario in India and around the world; potentials; achievements/applications; economics of renewable energy systems.

The big picture — world energy use, reserves, environmental aspects, and the renewable energy scenario in India and the world.

Unit 2 — Solar Energy (6 Periods, 20%)

Solar radiation; measurements of solar radiation; flat plate and concentrating collectors; solar direct thermal applications; solar thermal power generation; fundamentals of solar photo voltaic conversion; solar cells; solar PV power generation; solar PV applications.

Solar energy — radiation, collectors, solar thermal power, solar cells and solar PV power generation.

Unit 3 — Wind Energy (5 Periods, 20%)

Wind data and energy estimation; types of wind energy systems; performance; site selection; details of wind turbine generator; safety and environmental aspects.

Wind energy — wind data and energy estimation, types of wind energy systems, site selection and wind turbine generators.

Unit 4 — Bio-Energy (6 Periods, 20%)

Biomass direct combustion; biomass gasifiers; biogas plants; digesters; ethanol production; bio diesel; cogeneration; biomass applications.

Bio-energy — biomass combustion, gasifiers, biogas plants, ethanol, bio-diesel and cogeneration.

Unit 5 — Other Renewable Energy Sources (6 Periods, 20%)

Other renewable energy sources: tidal energy; wave energy; open and closed OTEC cycles; small hydro — geothermal energy; hydrogen and storage; fuel cell systems; hybrid systems.

The other sources — tidal, wave, OTEC, small hydro, geothermal, hydrogen, fuel cells and hybrid systems.

Instead of This Elective — Advance Skill Development

The 6th-semester scheme allows an Advance Skill Development certification course to be taken instead of Open Elective-02. No course name is given for the 6th-semester option in the PDF (unlike the 5th semester, which names Advanced Plumbing, TATA TECH.). No detailed contents for this certification course are given in the PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many marks is Renewable Energy Technology worth in the 6th semester?
50 marks internal only — the total is marked “NA” in the scheme, so it is not counted in the semester total. It carries 2 credits.

Which units carry the most weightage in Renewable Energy Technology?
Every unit carries the same weightage — 20% each — so none of them can be skipped.

Is Renewable Energy Technology a theory subject or a practical subject?
Open Elective-02: Renewable Energy Technology is theory (L–P 2 – 0).

Is Renewable Energy Technology counted in the 6th semester total of 650 marks?
No. Renewable Energy Technology (Open Elective-02) is 50 marks internal only, and its total is marked “NA” in the scheme — it is not counted in the semester total of 650 marks.

Can I take an Advance Skill Development course instead of this elective?
Yes. The scheme allows an Advance Skill Development certification course instead of Open Elective-02. Unlike the 5th semester, no course name is given for the 6th-semester option in the syllabus PDF, and no detailed contents are given.
